- On the POS
- “Look up balance” shows the balance and expiry date before anything is charged.
- Refunds
- If an online order paid with a gift card is refunded, the amount goes back on the card.
- Expiry
- Each card is valid for four years from the day of sale. The date is printed on the card.
- The number
- Resto shows only the last four characters. The full number is stored encrypted.
AI Assistant
The AI Assistant looks up a gift card for you
A guest calls and reads out the number on their card. You ask the AI Assistant in the back office and get the balance and the expiry date.

Gift card questions
Can guests buy gift cards online?
That is coming soon. Today, gift cards are sold on the POS. A digital card goes by email straight to the recipient. Guests can pay with a gift card in online ordering and QR ordering.
Can a card be used more than once?
Yes. The card works until the balance is used up or the card expires. Each use goes in the card’s ledger.
How is VAT handled?
Resto handles VAT on gift cards in line with Icelandic law. VAT is charged when the card is sold. When the card pays for food and drink, Resto takes the prepaid VAT off, so VAT is not charged twice. This applies on the receipt and in your books. Read more in our guide to gift cards in Iceland.
We have gift cards from another system. What happens to them?
When you switch to Resto, we move your gift cards and their balances across. The POS can also take SmartCard gift cards when it is connected to SmartCard. See switch to Resto.
