A POS that keeps working without internet

When the internet drops, staff keep taking orders and kitchen tickets keep printing. All your sales catch up when the connection returns.

Switching to Resto is free, and you can cancel at any time.

Without internet

What works without internet

Service runs on the devices and the local network. What needs the internet waits and catches up on its own when the connection returns.

Keeps working

Orders and payments save on the device. Printers run on the restaurant’s own network.

  • POS

Staff take orders, split checks, give discounts and take cash.

  • POS on a phone

Servers take orders at the table and send them to the kitchen printer.

  • Printers

Kitchen tickets and receipts print over the local network or Bluetooth.

  • Card terminal

A terminal with 4G keeps taking cards.

    Depends on terminal
  • Self-service kiosk

Guests order and pay when the card terminal has a connection. The kitchen ticket prints at once.

Waits for the internet

These need the internet. They update on their own when the connection returns.

  • New orders on other devices

Orders already on the kitchen display stay there. A kitchen with a printer gets new orders on paper meanwhile.

  • Sales in the back office

You see sales up to the outage. Sales made during the outage show in the reports when the connection returns.

  • End of day to accounting

Close the day when every device is back online. Then the settlement includes all of the day’s sales.

  • Price changes from the back office

New prices show on the devices when the connection returns. Until then, the old prices apply.

  • Room charges in hotels

The server keeps the check open until the connection returns.

Card payments

Taking cards when the internet is down

To approve a card, the terminal must reach the acquirer. You have three options, depending on your terminal and contract.

  1. 1If the terminal has 4G

Terminal with its own mobile connection

The terminal switches to 4G when the restaurant’s internet drops. Card payments work as usual.

  2. 2If the acquirer allows it

    Terminal that stores the payment

Some acquirers let the terminal store a payment and send it later. A maximum amount applies, and the restaurant carries the risk if the card is declined later.

  3. 3If neither works

    Cash or an open tab

The POS records a cash payment or keeps the tab open. The guest can pay when the terminal is back online.

Questions and answers

How long can Resto run without internet?
The POS keeps each record on the device until it reaches the cloud, however long the internet is down. Do not clear the app’s data or reinstall the app while records wait. Limits on card payments come from the acquirer, not from Resto.
What happens if the power goes out?
Tablets and phones run on battery. The router and the printers need power. A small backup battery (UPS) keeps them running. See hardware.
Can the same sale be recorded twice?
No. Each record gets its own number on the device that made it. The cloud accepts each number once, even if the record is sent more than once. If two devices changed the same check, Resto merges the changes.
How do I know the internet is down?
A line at the top of the POS screen says the device is offline and that changes will sync later. The line goes away when the connection returns, and the records go to the cloud on their own.
